When we found out that the children were being raised by their grandmothers and didn't have enough food, we decided to teach the grandmothers how to raise their own food.  We started by leasing 6 acres and planting maize.  The widows are responsible for managing and working the fields.  In October 2016, we harvested and are proud to say that we grew enough food to feed the four widows all the 2017 year.  We also gave them chickens, and they have raised the chickens and used their money wisely from the eggs to buy other animals, which brings in more money.

Pastor Joseph standing in the maize we started from seeds.

The ears of corn are pulled off the stalks, and a machine separates the kernels from the cob.  The kernels are laid in the sun to dry.

The kernels are then put in bags, weighted and stored.

We bought kale seeds and had Teresa and Martina plant them in their gardens. Ann and Elizabeth don't have land, so we made a sack garden of kale for them.

Each widow was given a hen.  They now have chicks and eggs.

Water is difficult to get unless you have a borehole, which is a well.  Teresa, Elizabeth, and Ann don't have boreholes.  Teresa will collect the rain water in this barrel and use it.

After generous donations from Northview church and other individuals, we were able to purchase more land and plant maize, bananas, beans, cow peas, manugu, onions, carrots and sweet potatoes.  We are able to use the food to help supplement food for the children.  We hope to purchase 5 acres in the future so we can grow food year round and feed all of the children at the school.
